How to Keep a Conversation Going

A great conversation is a two-person dance. Here's how to keep it moving without awkwardness.

The foundation: ask questions, don't just tell stories

If you just talk about yourself, they have nothing to work with. Ask open-ended questions that go beyond "What do you do?" Try: "What's something you've learned recently that surprised you?" or "What would be your dream weekend?"

How to respond in a way that keeps it going

Bad: "That's cool."
Good: "That's cool—I love that you're into that. Do you have a favorite place to do it?"
Better: "That's cool—I've always wanted to try that. What got you into it?"

Include context about yourself, share an observation, then ask them something. This creates back-and-forth.

The 3-beat rhythm for natural conversation

Beat 1 - Respond to what they said. Show you actually read it.
Beat 2 - Add something about yourself. Relate or share something relevant.
Beat 3 - Ask them something back. Keep the ball in their court.

Topics that keep conversations alive

✓ Dreams and goals (where do you see yourself in 5 years?)
✓ Values and what matters to them
✓ Travel experiences and dream destinations
✓ Music, movies, shows they love
✓ Funny stories or embarrassing moments
✓ What they're passionate about
✓ Questions that show you're curious (not just vetting them)

Topics that kill conversations

✗ Heavy stuff too early (exes, trauma, previous dating failures)
✗ Only asking yes/no questions
✗ Vetting questions that feel like an interrogation
✗ Controversial topics before you know them
✗ Bringing everything back to dating/relationships
✗ Monologuing about yourself

Signs the conversation is going well

They're asking you questions back. They're sharing personal details. They're using emojis or being playful. They're responding quickly. They're remembering things you said. This is your cue to suggest moving to a video call or meeting in person soon.

When to move from messaging to video/in-person

After 3-5 good back-and-forth exchanges, if both people are engaged, suggest: "This is fun—want to video chat sometime?" or "I'd love to grab coffee and continue this conversation in person. When are you free?"
Don't message forever. Real connection happens in person.

Bottom line: Keep conversations alive by being genuinely interested, sharing about yourself, and asking follow-up questions. The goal isn't to keep messaging forever—it's to get comfortable enough to meet in person where real chemistry happens.
